Ways to combat this

There are many ways that teachers, parents, students and the community can address the struggles against reading comprehension. Many students struggle recognizing letters, sentences, and understanding vocabulary. While many students can read a sentence, there will be a struggle in many students that recalling in the information that they had previously read.

Ways that people can combat the struggle are very simple:

  1. Frequent reading schedules. Students who read everyday for 15-30 minutes over time will start seeing improvement in reading.

  2. Reading in a positive environment. It’s easy to understand that if a student is in a disruptive classroom, busy park, loud areas, or other overwhelming areas, the students may struggle to focus. Having an area where a student can focus and take their time reading can help students when trying to read.

  3. Frequent summarization. Students who take the time to summarize the passage that they just read, helps the students check if they understand and are able to explain the information that they had just learned.

  4. Set small reading goals. Maybe a student feels overwhelmed by reading many chapters in one sitting, having a reading goal allows for students to go at their own pace and not feel overwhelmed about the information that is in front of them.

Setting these boundaries helps not only students in the long run, but it also helps teachers, parents, and the community that the students are connected to.
